The Cottage Range Technical Specification

The Cottage Range Technical Specification

The Cottage Range is a truly superb collection of handcrafted Western Red Cedar garden rooms that will enhance and complement any garden. The Cottage Range of buildings are all handmade at our factory in Worcestershire where we have been making quality timber garden buildings for over 40 years.

We only use Western Red Cedar in our Cottage Range of garden buildings.

Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata) is a contemporary yet classic building material offering beauty, versatility and durability. No man-made material can match Cedar’s beauty and centuries of proven performance. Western Red Cedar is preferred where attractive appearance, superior performance and resistance to weather are paramount.

Western Red Cedar has superior thermal insulating properties and is far superior to brick, concrete and steel. This helps keep buildings cool in the summer and reduce heating costs in the winter. Cedar has a very low shrinkage factor and is therefore highly resistant to warping, twisting and shrinkage.

Western Red Cedar’s naturally occurring compounds called ‘thujaplicins’ act as natural preservatives making the wood incredibly durable. Properly finished and maintained, cedar will deliver decades of low maintenance timber.

Whilst Western Red Cedar offers unparalleled performance, it is also renowned for its distinctive beauty. Cedar provides natural charm and warmth that cannot be duplicated by plastic, steel or composite products.

Do not settle for anything less than the best. Western Red Cedar – specify it by name.

Wall construction

Walls are constructed from Canadian Western Red Cedar tongue and groove shiplap fixed onto deal framework.
Internal walls are lined with painted grooved MDF lining. Insulation is available as an optional upgrade.

Floor

The floor is constructed using pressure treated deal tongue and groove floor boards fixed to pressure treated floor joists, which are also treated with a high quality timber preservative. A 19mm heavy duty floor and a choice of laminate floor coverings are also available as optional upgrades.

Roof

All summerhouses (excluding the Stretton and the Harwood) have pressure treated Canadian Western Red Cedar shingle tiles fixed to a pressure treated deal framework. Underneath the shingle roof, the inner roof is covered with mineral roofing felt.

The Stretton and the Harwood have EPDM rubber roof covering fitted as standard.

All inner roofs are constructed using pressure treated joists. The inner roof is covered with painted tongue & groove patterned MDF lining and insulation is available as an optional upgrade.

External finish

A comprehensive paint system to both protect and decorate the exterior is applied externally. Each building receives several coats of a highly durable and weather resistant primer and paint system.

Doors and windows

All windows and doors are joinery made from Canadian Western Red Cedar. All glazing is 4mm toughened safety glass as standard, with the option of double glazed units. Please note single glazed windows have a curved top and double glazed windows have a straight top, square design.

All doors are fitted with a 3-lever mortice lock, and additional doors and windows are available where size and position permits.

Our 10 year guarantee

All Malvern Cottage buildings come with a 10 year timber guarantee against rot and decay. This guarantee is subject to all exterior timbers being maintained in line with the manufacturers’ recommendations. All other workmanship and materials are guaranteed for a twelve month period from date of installation. This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights.

We would like to remind customers that timber is an organic product, subject to naturally occurring changes that may result from different environmental conditions i.e. changes in colour, surface splits and shrinkage. We can not accept responsibility for these natural changes.
