Relax and read
At Malvern Garden Buildings, we are proud of the huge variety of quality garden buildings in our collection. But one of the most exciting ranges we have is our summerhouse collection. After all, the possibilities really are endless when it comes to what you can actually do with your summerhouse! Will it be a craft room? Will it be your painting studio? Will it be a cosy retreat to have a natter with friends over lunch? Or will it be your own dreamy mini-library, where you can curl up in a comfy chair and lose yourself in a good book?
That last option really does sound appealing, doesn’t it?
Of course, we all love technology. After all, you wouldn’t be reading this blog post without it! But, there really is nothing better than switching off the digital world for a while. The scent of the pages, the feel of a tangible item to lose ourselves in whole new realms – nothing beats a “real” book!
Plus, the fact that reading in your Malvern Garden Building is so good has a great deal of scientific evidence behind it too!
Firstly, whilst using your brain after a busy day at the office may not seem like the top thing you want to do in the evening, your brain is like any other muscle in the body. It needs to be exercised to stay fit and healthy. So, the more you use it, the more you can help it ward off Alzheimer’s and dementia. But not only that, reading improvesyour memory too. As there is so much to remember when reading fiction, for instance (characters, plots, sub-plots, places, back-stories), your brain does a great job at picking it all up right where you left off. And for every memory you create like this, your brain creates a new synapse, and strengthens existing ones. This means better short term memory over all and a healthier, more active brain.
Reading can also improve your focus and concentration. In our digitally-crazed world, a 5 minute span can include checking email, checking social media, texting, chatting to co-workers and doing the actual work you need to do. However when you read, the rest of the world around you falls away as you are absorbed in the story. Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work in the morning, and you’ll be surprised how much easier you find concentrating on the task at hand in the office!
But, one of the best reasons our Malvern Garden Buildings team love reading is the tranquility it brings. In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it’s possible that the subject you read about can bring on immense inner peace and tranquility. Reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about a sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses.
So, whatever benefits you feel most important to you, be sure to find time to grab that cuppa, curl up inside your summerhouse this summer and get lost in a great read.
