The Retreat:

12′ x 10′ cedar Studio Pent

The roof of the Studio Pent adds a contemporary look and feel to any outdoor area. With large double glazed windows either side of the double glazed double doors, the Studio Pent maximizes the use of available light, making it the perfect garden room for relaxing with family and friends, working on hobbies and crafts or using as a home office.

Jo is a British-born designer who graduated from Ravensbourne College of Design in 2000 with a First degree in Fashion & Textiles, and returned to hands-on making after working for many years as a menswear designer. Her focus turned seriously to producing her wrapped and woven work in 2015 when she set up her creative practice at Resort in Kent. Many of Jo’s recent pieces have been directly informed by the studio environment and exposure to the creative disciplines and approaches of fellow members.

The inspiration:

Jo’s current work explores the seemingly simple act of manipulating string and cord in one direction against another. Binding and wrapping with natural fibres, Jo’s occasional furniture provides a distinctive take on the traditional craft of seat-weaving, upholding the idea of the seat as a decorative as well as a functional object. Her artwork showcases a more abstract approach, an exploration of texture and colour as a starting point, while small woven ‘postcard’ pieces often portray architectural scenes and spaces. She creates work by commission for private clients, and works with interior designers, stylists and curators on bespoke projects.

From giving a tired old chair or stool a fabulous new lease of life with her contemporary take on the traditional craft of seat-weaving, to stunning artwork to make an intriguing statement, Jo’s work is incredibly skilful and in-depth.

Jo was the winner of an Elle Decoration British Design Award in 2017 and has been invited to exhibit at the British Craft Pavilion as part of the 2018 London Design Festival in September.

How the Studio Pent
was used:

Jo’s artisan retreat for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show replicates elements of her Margate studio re-imagined as a garden retreat. Mirroring the work itself, she has designed a space aiming to create a sense of balance and stillness. The simple geometry of her pieces is complemented by objects from collaborators and contemporaries, including wood-turner and furniture maker Will Elworthy and artist Karen Radford.

The studio’s planting design has been created by Whitstable-based, RHS award-winning garden designer Sarah Morgan, owner of The Garden Creative. Sarah has worked to complement Jo’s graphic patterns with a restrained palette of plants which echo the horizontal and vertical discipline of warp and weft. A naturalistic feeling, typical of The Garden Creative’s work, sets organic chaos against the linear surfaces of Jo’s designs.
