Meet The Planted House
Located within the heart of Penzance, Cornwall is The Planted House, founded by partners Antonia and Ian Adams. Their independent business is home to a diverse and ever evolving abundance of tropical and sub-tropical indoor plants, alongside a plethora of beautiful pots. Their 2022 RHS Chelsea Houseplant Studio design is A Room to Dance.
Combining a love for horticulture and interior design
Antonia has nutured an evolving hoard of houseplants since her early teens when her grandmother began giving her cuttings from her own collection.
She says, “I have never lived anywhere without sharing my space with a chaos of foliage and meandering stems!”
For years, Antonia worked as a glass artist specialising in etched botanical design and aspired for a change away from its intensity. This desire lead to her opening a houseplant pop up shop near Bath in 2017 where she met her partner Ian.
Together, they relocated to Penzance and combined their love of horticulture and interior design, which paved the way for The Planted House – a specialist houseplant shop with a diverse collection of plants, pots and related ephemera.
A Room to DanceRHS Gold Medal Winner
The Planted House will be occupying the Studio Apex building at RHS Chelsea 2022, bringing their vision, A Room to Dance, to life.
A dramatic aerial garden will be the focus of their design with rattan woven throughout the space.
Antonia shared an insight into her design intention, explaining: “Our installation takes the form of an aerial indoor garden; a diverse, co-mingling of trailing, vining and epiphytic subtropical specimens.”
“Plants will cascade or climb from a suspended constellation of handmade stoneware pots; creating a delicate theatre of leaf shapes, textures and wandering stems.”
“Our vision is to create a poetic dance between growth and permanence.”
