The Plant Parlour & GrowTropicals

Hope After Humanity is a collaboration between Gemma Haigh, founder of The Plant Parlour, and tropical plant supplier GrowTropicals, exclusively for Chelsea Flower Show 2024. The exhibit is inspired by dark, moody environments depicted in mainstream media and plants ruling the world. The design boldly confronts this year’s RHS theme of ‘sustainability’ delivering a powerful message about the dangers of global warming and the need to slow climate change.

Gemma Haigh, founder of The Plant Parlour, is a responsible rare plant collector, influencer, and sustainability champion.

Established in 2021, @theplantparlourgram has become a space where Gemma shares her love of plants and nature. With a green thumb and an eye for design, Gemma shares content that makes houseplants more accessible to people.

As a highly motivated researcher with a curatorial background in the arts, Gemma brings a unique approach to design. Merging the conceptual with interior styling, she creates spaces that bring the outdoors in. In her own home, Gemma grows huge aroids and favours low-maintenance plant care set-ups.

Gemma’s first visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2021 left her captivated by the creativity of the show gardens. However, it was the houseplant studios that particularly impressed her. The vibrant array of colours, materials, and plants fired her imagination. It was then that she began to dream of one day designing her own houseplant studio.

Hope After Humanity is an exhibit where Gemma aims to explore what can be achieved when sustainability and creativity come together, showcasing the beauty of nature in its untouched state.

“I love to challenge people’s perceptions with design, incorporating unusual items into planting arrangements. I use salvage and recycled materials to make décor displays more environmentally friendly, and rare houseplants to show the sheer variety of types available.”

Think dark foliage, vining plants and bringing the outside in.

The design embraces biophilic design and naturalistic planting. The Flat Roof Studio will be transformed into a new world, using deep colours, glossy foliage, velvet leaves and soft textures to achieve a uniquely immersive display. The mysterious planting and design will create an enchanted atmosphere, giving each plant agency and personality within a distinctive setting.

Hope After Humanity is something to be experienced, not just viewed. An exhibit that will seek to evoke an emotional response to climate change, transporting visitors from RHS Chelsea Flower Show to a whole new world.
